Tommy Burrel Rutherford, 72, died Saturday, April 20 at Riverview Nursing & Rehabilitation in Boerne, Texas. 

He was born Dec. 13, 1946 to OB and Rene Rutherford in Dodge City. 

He was married to Beverly Ann Thrasher from 1968 to 1994.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1964 and served until 1968 during Vietnam on a PBR, patrolling the rivers and supporting insertion and extraction of Navy Seal Teams where he also extracted downed pilots and POW’s. 

After his service in the Navy, he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from WT State in Canyon, Texas.  He worked in the field of agriculture up and down the panhandle and throughout Western Kansas until 1982. 

He began a career in law enforcement in 1983, where he worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., and eventually for Seward County in Liberal. 

Survivors include sons: K. Burrel Rutherford and spouse, Pennie Rutherford, Sonora, Ariz., Ross Rutherford and spouse, Martha Rutherford, Boerne, Texas, and Zane Rutherford and spouse, Kim Rutherford, Amarillo Texas; brothers, Jack Rutherford and John Rutherford; sisters, Margie Littlejohn and Sarah; eight grandchildren: Ross “Rodney” Jr., Hope, Sophie, Garrett, Stephanie, Sarah, Melanie, and Cody; and seven great-grandchildren: Dylan, Emma, Weston, Keelie, Kase, Stella and Alainnah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and granddaughter, Faith Rutherford.

• Memorial services took place Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery in Fort Dodge.
