philip phillipsULYSSES – Philip W. Phillips, 76, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at Sunrise Senior Living in Frisco, Texas. 

He was born Nov. 7, 1941 to Verlan Cecil and Geraldine Margaret (Gill) Phillips in Dodge City. 

He married Jaynelle Wheeler Aug. 24, 1963. She preceded him in death.

He graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1959, where he received state honors playing trumpet. He continued his education at Fort Hays State University and graduated from the University of Kansas mortuary science program. 

He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer.  He spent many years operating funeral homes in Ulysses, Johnson and Hugoton, as well as a flower shop and monument company. 

He retired in September 1998 and enjoyed traveling. 

Over the years, he was President of the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts, Kansas Funeral Directors Association and was a lifetime member of the Jaycees. He was also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Ulysses Rotary Club, Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. 

He was a private pilot and enjoyed playing golf, dancing, snow skiing and jazz music. 

Survivors include three sons: Philip J. Phillips and wife, Enid, Owasso, Okla., Patrick Phillips and wife, Connie, Blanchard, Okla., and Paul Phillips and wife, Alice, Frisco, Texas; sister, Mari Lisbeth Dobbins and husband, Kent, Lawrence; 11 grandchildren: Kendra Phillips, Brooke Bentley, Jacob Phillips, Ross Phillips, Rhett Phillips, Colten Phillips, Haley Potts, James Berggren, Ernesto Diaz, Derrick Allen and Jennifer Schafer; and six great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Lynn; and foster sisters, Jane Adams and Marilou Jarvis.

• Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses. 

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with Reverend Peter Fernandez presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses. 

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
