gary painterELKHART – Gary Lee Painter, 74, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 in his home after a long battle with heart disease. 

He was born Aug. 13, 1945 to Homer Milton and Jeanna Mae (Stai-Benish) Painter in Williston, N.D. 

He married Cherry Turner in 1973. She survives. 

He attended school in Alexander, N.D.  At an early age, he helped his father on the farm, which began his lifetime love of farming. 

In 1967, he moved to Elkhart to join the Hurn Brothers harvest crew. 

Survivors also include great-granddaughter, PriesLee Simmons of the home; daughter, Shana Bitner, and her children, Derek Painter and fiancée Ashlyn Smith, and their daughter Tayla Painter, Shyan Ayler, and her daughters, Jae Lynn and Neiyla Brecheisen; son, Craig Painter and wife Missy, and their children, Aquilla Heller and husband Tucker, and Dakota Painter; daughter, Shona Williams and husband Justin, and their children Railee, A’Lea, Trey and Brenli Williams; seven sisters; one brother; and many other family and friends.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; a niece; and a nephew.

• Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2019 at First Church of God in Elkhart with Pastor Denny Huebner presiding. 

Burial will take place at a later date at the Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart.
