donald wardDonald L. “Poncho” Ward, 69, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.  

He was born July 31, 1950 to Perry R. Ward, Sr. and Ellen Irene (Bright) Ward in Iams.

He served his country for 11 years in the United States Marine Corps, including action in the Vietnam War.  He achieved the rank of Sergeant and received numerous awards including the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, the RVN Cross of Gallantry, and two Purple Heart Medals.

He worked for National Beef Packing in their maintenance department for 36 years.

He was an active member and Second Commander of V.F.W. Post 5901, Ottawa, KS.

Survivors include son, Korey J. Ward and wife, Misty, Ottawa; granddaughter, Payton J. Ward, Ottawa; three step-grandchildren: Christine Bell, Ottawa, and Remington and Caroline Brannon, Ottawa; five sisters: Carroll Jean Ward, Ottawa, Mary Lou Starbuck, Ottawa, Betty I. Ramirez, Ottawa, Joy C. Ward, Ottawa, and Nancy K. Ward, Garnett.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Perry R. Ward Jr. and Bob Joe Martindale; and sister, Shirley Ann Gray.

• Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Paola.  

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa.
