Leader & Times

If there was such a thing as an “Instant Classic” in middle school basketball, Thursday’s battle between the Eisenhower Warrior eight graders and Horace Good would qualify.

The two teams never allowed the other to take control, and it took overtime before the Hawks were able to earn a 53-51 win over the Warriors.

In the end, the much taller Jake Underwood proved to be too much for the Warriors. Underwood scored 26 points, and despite picking up his fourth foul midway through the fourth quarter, he was able to avoid a fifth and scored key baskets late and in overtime to secure the win for the Hawks.

Despite the advantage of the taller Underwood, the Warriors kept pace with the Hawks all the way to the final seconds.

Horace good had an early lead, but the Warriors battled back to take a 13-9 advantage after the first quarter.

But the Hawks responded in the second quarter while the Warriors had to do most of their work from the free throw line. The Hawks outscored the Warriors 14-8 with four of Eisenhower’s eight coming from the free throw line, and the Hawks had a 23-21 halftime lead.

Chris Robledo came alive for the Warriors in the third quarter, scoring eight of Eisenhower’s 12 points in the period, and Horace good was held to 10, and the game was tied 33-33.

The game stayed close until the final two minutes when the Warriors built a 43-39 lead.

Eisenhower had a chance to extend the lead to six, but a missed shot turned into a fast break chance for the Hawks, and Underwood made the shot and was fouled. He made the free throw to cut Eisenhower’s lead to one.

The Warriors worked the clock under a minute and took a Isaac Ybarra made a shot that gave Eisenhower a three-point lead, 45-42.

But Underwood answered with a shot in the closing seconds and was fouled, and he made the free throw to send the game to overtime..

Horace Good broke a 51-51 tie in the final 20 seconds with a basket, and the Warriors couldn’t answer in a 53-51 loss.

Robledo led the Warriors with 21 points. Izzy Garcia added. 12.
