FORGAN, Okla.— For three of the four quarters the Forgan Bulldogs were right there with the Laverne Tigers. But in the second quarter Laverne dominated Forgan 20-8, then kept the game in check to defeat the Bulldogs, 67-51.

“We played hard,” Bulldogs Head Coach Rob Lancaster said. “We just struggled with some things. I was proud of the effort we played with. Laverne is physical and that’s hard for us to match.”

Forgan matched Laverne basket for basket at the start, pounding the ball inside to 6-6, big-framed freshman Kadan Delatorre for ten points in ten minutes of game time. The first quarter ended with the two teams locked at 14-14.

Foul trouble struck as Delatorre was called for his second and third fouls on block attempts. Both calls seemed questionable at best. When Delatorre went to the bench with 5:53 left in the half, Forgan trailed 19-16. Laverne outscored Forgan 15-6 the rest of the half to take a 34-22 lead.

“He’s the only guy we’ve got with much size so when he had to come sit it makes us small,” Lancaster said. “Our rebounding goes down and they got a lot of second shots. It’s hard for him as a freshman to get back in a rhythm after sitting for long stretches.”

Forgan’s Ramon Martinez started off the second half strong, scoring the Bulldogs first eight points, including a pair of threes, of the second half. Colby Bryer also hit a pair of threes as Forgan cut the lead back to single digits three times.

But Laverne answered every time, including hitting three of their ten treys during that same stretch. Laverne pushed the lead back to double digits (47-36) with 2:30 left in the third, and never let it dip below it again.

Delatorre had sat most of the third quarter as well after picking up an early foul in the quarter. Delatorre did not score in the second half until he hit both free throws with 3:51 on the clock. Eighteen minutes of game clock had passed since his final field goal.

Forgan finished 14-31 from 2-point range, 4-17 from 3-point range, and 11-19 at the line. Laverne was 11-33 from two, 10-24 from three, and 15-19 from the line.

Kaden Delatorre finished with 13 points on 5-8 shooting and 3-4 at the line. Ramon Martinez also scored 13. Martinez was 2-5 from 2-point, 2-8 from 3-point, and 3-5 at the line. Colby Bryer added 10 on 4-14 shooting.

Forgan (6-17) will take on Yarbrough Friday night at Tyrone in the first round of the Class B District 4 playoffs. Despite their record Coach Lancaster feels his team has a chance to advance in the playoffs.

“If we play well, I think we can surprise some people,” Lancaster said. “We’ve got to find some more ways to score and raise our intensity. If we don’t do those things, we’ll be home quick.”
