The Redskin wrestlers returned form Christmas break to face the Hays Indians, but the first match of 2019 was a struggle for Liberal in a 60-12 loss.

Liberal only scored three wins and had two open weights.

Gaspar Falcon scored a 7-2 win in the 106-pound division, Carlos Mora got an 8-2 win in the 145-pound weight class, and Max Lugo pinned Landon Summers in the 152-pound division.

Seven Liberal wrestlers lost by pin.

I’m proud of the guys we have here,” Liberal coach Kyle Molina said. “The guys that came over the break and working hard, I’m proud of their effort. We put them in some bad situations, but I’m proud of what they did tonight.”

With a smaller roster, Molina had to focus on gaining experience in the WAC opener.

“Some of these young guys are getting experience,” he said. “We are shorthanded, open in a couple spots. But we won’t compromise who we are for other guys. The kids sticking here working hard are who we are going forward with.

And Molina will measure success one wrestler at a time.

“We had a couple of rough weeks with the kids, but we are going to focus on the kids that are here,” Molina said. “We will put our effort into them.”
