Dodge City hadn’t allowed a goal in the first five games of the season until the Redskins scored in the second half Tuesday at Redskin Field to take a 1-0 lead.

But the Red demons were able to rally for a 2-1, dropping the Redskins to 4-2 on the season, 1-1 in Western Athletic Conference play.

Liberal and Dodge played to a stalemate in the first half, but about 10 minutes into the second half, Liberal put the first goal in the Dodge City net for the first time all season, and the Redskins had a 1-0 lead.

Dodge City had few scoring opportunities thanks to a strong Redskin defense, but a physical play inside the Redskin box left a Red Demon on the turf, and the officials called the foul on Liberal, setting up a penalty kick for the Red Demons.

Dodge City tied the game on the free kick, and after Liberal put the ball back in play at midfield, a quick turnover gave the Red Demons a second scoring chance, and they again found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead.

The Redskins continued to battle and had two strong scoring opportunities including a pass to the far left side of an open net, but the ball just missed the net.

Mike Fonseca had another chance late, but when he squeezed between two Dodge City defenders and was dropped to the turf, Fonseca was called for the foul rather than the Red Demons.

In the final seconds, Fonseca launched a shot at the goal that just sailed high and wide at the buzzer, and the Redskins fell 2-1.

The Redskins will have one day to regroup and will face Garden City at 4 p.m. Thursday at Redskin Field.
