PARK CITY — The Lady Saints dug an early hole, and after they crawled out of it, they couldn’t overcome a late surge by the Butler Lady Grizzlies in a 62-54 loss in the Region 6 championship.

Despite the loss, the Lady Saints are expected to receive an at-large bid by turning in a 30-3 record against one of the toughest schedules in the nation and a regula reason Jayhawk West title.

The Lady Saints fell behind 17-2 before Carla Covane  to cut the Butler lead to 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Lexi Hernandez led the comeback in the second quarter by dropping back-to-back threes, and midway through the period she connected on a third. Silvia Veloso made a basket and a free throw that cut Butler’s lead to 24-21.

Seward continued to outpace the Lady Grizzlies to start the second half, and pair of Covane free throws led to a 27-27 tie.

Hernandez hit a basket and a three to push Seward to a five-point lead, and a basket and free throw from Covane gave Seward its biggest lead at 35-29.

Butler responded with a 5-0 run, but Seward protected the lead until Butler was able to force a 40-40 tie at the end of the third quarter.

Karolina Szydlowska drained a three to start the fourth quarter, but it would be the only three she made out of six attempts.

Butler regained the lead with 8:02 to play, but the Lady Saints prevented the Grizzlies form putting the game out of reach.

Hernandez cut the lead to one with a three with 5:09 to play, and a basket from Aquila Mucubaquire with 1:38 to play kept Butler’s lead at one, 55-54.

But the Grizzlies would end the game on a 7-0 run, five of those from the free throw line, and the Lady Saints would fall 62-54.

Hernandez led the Lady Saints with 19 points in the loss, the second loss this season to the Lady Grizzlies.

Szydlowska ended her night with 14 points.

Covane put together a double doubler, scoring 11 points to go along with 14 rebounds.

Covane, Hernandez and Veloso were all named to the All Region 6 Tournament Team.

The Lady Saints will now wait to see the NJCAA National Tournament Selection show to see if they receive a bid.
