After playing the first eight games of the season on the road, the Lady Redskins finally had a chance to play on their own field Thursday in a Western Athletic Conference contest against Great Bend, and the Lady Redskins rallied in the second half for a 2-1 win to complete the season sweep over the Lady Panthers.

With temperatures hovering in the 40s and a strong north wind howling across the field, the Lady Redskins played into the wind in the first half and had several shots on goal but could not find the net.

Great Bend, despite having the wind at their backs, had few opportunities inside the box against the Lady Redskin defense.

Twice in the first half Lady Redskins went down on the turf inside the Lady Panther box, but neither of them were called fouls.

But in the 37th minute of the first half, the Lady Redskins were called for a foul just outside their own box, and Great Bend was able to convert the long kick high into the far side of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.

But in the second half, with the wind behind the Lady Redskins, the ball rarely made its way to the Liberal goal, and the Lady Redskins took shot after shot at the Lady Panther goal only to have them sail wide or right to the Lady Panther goal keeper.

The Lady Redskins had a scare when midfielder Aileen Moreno collided with another Lady Redskin and had to come out of the game for several minutes, but she was able to return about 15 minute later.

After the injury, the Lady Redskins continued to keep the pressure in the Lady Panthers box, and in the ninth minute of the second half Kim Alarcon took a corner kick and dribbled it closer to the goal before sending a centering pass to Jasmine Hernandez who was able to kick the ball into the goal and tie the game 1-1.

Moreno returned and was able to dominate the right sideline, moving the ball upfield at will and push for shots in the middle.

But the Lady Panthers continued to defend the goal until the 29th minute of the second half when Gisselle Melendez dribbled the ball down the left sideline, moved into the box and took a shot across the goal to the far right side to give the Lady Redskins a 2-1 lead.

Liberal had chances to add to the lead but couldn’t convert, but the Lady Redskins defense along with a strong wind prevented Great Bend form posing any serious threat in the final 10 minutes, and the Lady Redskins earned the 2-1 win.

Liberal moved to 4-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in WAC play.
