Leader & Times

BALKO, Okla.—Elese Creason scored 24 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter as the Balko Lady Bison pulled away late for a hard-fought 53-45 victory over Turpin.

“We got the ball inside tonight at that was one of our main goals,” Lady Bison Coach Brittany Johnson said. “We felt like we had an advantage in there. We knocked down some free throws at the end.”

Balko trailed the Lady Cardinals 35-34 heading into the fourth, it what was a see-saw battle throughout. The Lady Bison were able to create enough of a gap in the final four minutes and went 9 of 10 from the charity stripe down the stretch to help extend the lead.

“Caroline Olvera came in and it really changed the momentum when we went to the press,” Johnson said. “We haven’t worked on it, but it worked well tonight.”

Early on, Turpin used their quickness and athleticism to build a small lead. Balko countered with a half-court trap that caused turnovers for the Lady Cardinals, especially with starting point guard Sailor Parker missing the game.

“I was pleased with our effort, but we just turned the ball over way too many times,” Lady Cardinals Coach Braydon Robinson said. We missed Sailor against their trap.”

Lizzete Aquino led the Cardinals first half charge, scoring 11 of her team-high 16 in the first quarter. The long ball played a big role in Turpin’s offense with Aquino hitting three treys, Carmen Levens hitting three, and Riley Lehnert adding two more.

Balko’s Taylor Cardwell was the Bison’s main offensive cog in the first half when she scored 9 of her 11 points. Tayla Mahaffey added outside shooting for Balko with a pair of threes.

Balko took care of business at the free throw line as a team, making 18 of 25, while Turpin finished just 5 of 10.

Balko (2-0) will host Goodwell, Tuesday. Turpin (0-1) will be at Tyrone, Tuesday.
