Before the first quarter came to an end, Katie Horyna had already reached double digits in scoring, and early in the third quarter she had enough points by herself to account for the 66-19 win over Holcomb.

Horyna scored 13 of her game-high 27 points in the first quarter, and she had 15 by half.

She cranked in 12 more in the third quarter and only saw limited action in the fourth with the huge lead.

The Lady Red defense was crushing for the Lady Longhorns.

Liberal allowed seven points in the first quarter, six in the second, and only three in the third and three more in the fourth.

Machia Mullens also had a strong night with 14 points. Whitney Hay dropped in three three pointers for nine.

“I was happy with the way Katie played,” Liberal coach Carter Kruger said. “She set the tone for us offensively.”

Kruger was also happy with the way the defense was able to adjust at half and cut the fouls down while also preventing Holcomb from cutting in to the huge lead.

“I was proud of the defensive effort in the second half,” he said. “We cleaned some mistakes up from the first half and guarded without fouling. We will be pretty good if we can keep the other team off the free throw line.”

And the Lady Redskin offense also exploded in the third quarter for 25 points.

“We talked about the offensive sets and some tweaks we needed to make,” Kruger said. “We just have to tip the cap to our players tonight. They got it started the right way.”

Along with Horyna and Mullens, Kruger also felt the win was a team effort.

“Whitney hit some big shots, the bench had a great half defensively,” Kruger said. “Audrey Gilmore played really well. She does a lot of different things for us. We will keep trying to build.”

But the Guymon Lady Tigers will provide a different challenge Tuesday.

“We have a good start,” Kruger said. “When we watch film on Guymon, we are going in to a Tiger’s den down there. It will be a tough battle. It’s always hard to get out of there with a win. If we can bring the same type of energy and excitement we did tonight, I like our chances.”
