Syris Dunlap wouldn’t throw in the towel against Dodge City Saturday in The Big House. The standout junior helped the Redskins overcome a double digit deficit to take a fourth quarter lead, but the Dodge City Red demons were able to force overtime and rally back to knock off the Redskins 64-63.

Liberal has three shots before the buzzer for the win, but all three shots missed the mark, and as the buzzer sounded, a frustrated Hunter Hatcher tossed the ball up to the goal, and it went in.

It was a fitting way to end a frustrating season so far for the Redskins in the Western Athletic Conference. Liberal dropped back-to-back WAC games Friday and Saturday by a combined six points after trailing in both games by double digits.

Dodge City was unstoppable early, knocking down three three pointers in the first quarter to help the Red Demons jump out to an 18-9 lead.

But the Redskins used the long ball to rally in the second quarter after the Red Demons built a 12-point lead, and long-range shots from Hunter Hatcher, Jordan Mendoza and Brody Sumner helped the Redskins chip away at the lead and sent the Redskins to the locker room trailing 29-24 at half.

Dodge City quickly pushed out to a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but three more bombs from Hatcher, Dunlap and Sumner allowed the Redskins to cut Dodge City’s lead to only one at the end of the third quarter, 40-39.

That’s when Dunlap took over. Every time the Red Demons attempted to stretch the lead, Dunlap made a cut to the basket to keep the game close, and Mendoza nd Sumner connected on two more threes when the Red Demons would build a four-point lead to keep the game within a possession.

Liberal finally took a lead with less than three minutes to play, and after building a four-point lead of their own, the Red Demons found a way to rally, knocking down two threes in the final two minutes.

The Redskins had the lead and the ball with less than a minute to play, but the Redskins were called for a five-second violation on an inbound play, and the Red Demons were able to tie the game and force overtime.

Liberal took the early lead in overtime, but the Red Demons kept the score close, and after a basket by the Redskins was waved off and a charging foul called instead, the Red Demons were able to flip Liberal’s one-point lead into a one-point Dodge City lead, and after the Redskins moved the ball to halfcourt, a long delay ensued when the game clock reset, and the time was reset to 14 seconds in the game.

The Redskins drove to the lane for a shot that missed, but the Redskins rebounded and tried another point blank range shot that also missed, and a third attempt also came up short.

The loose ball trickled out to the three point line as time expired, and the Red demons held on for a 64-63 win.

Liberal fell to 9-7, 1-4 in the WAC and will need a strong finish to get back in the top eight for Sub-State seeding. Liberal is currently a half-game behind Wichita East (10-7).
