Leader & Times

BEAVER, Okla.— Beaver looked to be in charge most of the night and looked at times like they might blow the game wide open. But Forgan managed to rally, but the Dusters regrouped late for a 57-50 win.

Beaver had led Forgan after a fast start by double digits most of the first half. With less than a minute left in the third quarter, Beaver led Forgan 40-29. But the Brett Smalts grabbed a defensive rebound and threw a full court length pass to Ramon Martinez who laid it in and was fouled. Mills converted the three-point play. Then Martinez drained a wing three with 3.5 seconds left in the third, and Forgan had cut an 11-point deficit to five in less than 30 seconds.

The Bulldogs continued their rally with a 6-0 run to start the fourth capped by a Christ Mills basket that game Forgan their only lead of the game (41-40) with 6:40 left to play.

But Beaver had an answer. After the game was tied at 42, Beaver went on a 7-0 run over a three-minute span. Forgan was able to cut it to three with 1:40, but could not get closer than that. Beaver made 7 of 8 free throws in the finals minutes to hold on for the win.

Beaver was on fire to start the game, hitting four threes in the first quarter in the midst of a 15-2 run that put them up 20-7. Forgan countered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead back to single digits (20-14) with six minutes left in the half.

Beaver’s response – three trips, three treys. Beaver led 29-14 with 3:40 left in the half and led 35-20 at the break.

One team stat that stood out from the rest, free throws. Beaver finished the game 14 of 21 from the charity strip. Forgan made just 7 of 20, the margin in made free throws matched the final margin of the game.

Beaver’s Jesus Gonzalez led the Dusters with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Jovany Enriquez added 14 and Clay Pugh 12. Forgan was led by Chris Mills with 13. Kadan Delatorre came off the bench to score 12.

Beaver (1-0) will travel to Fort Supply, Monday. Forgan (1-2) will host Texhoma.
