Monday’s Memorial Day holiday marked the unofficial beginning of summer, and along with vacations, garage sales are a traditional part of the fun the season brings.

With the help of her son, Chandler Kirkhart, Tara Kirkhart began taking the garage sale concept to a community-wide basis in the Oklahoma Panhandle town of Turpin a few years ago.

Saturday, the fourth edition of the annual sale will take place in the town starting at 8 a.m., and Tara said she is excited to see what happens this weekend.

“It’s that time of year again where families start cleaning out their garages, closets and purging things they no longer need,” she said. “If you are one who can’t pass by a garage sale without stopping, then you need to be in Turpin, Oklahoma, Saturday, June 2, starting at 8. There are a great number of yard sales in the community.”

As of Monday, 15 yard sales were signed up for Saturday’s fun, and Tara said there is a big possibility of more being added to the list.

“The list is found on Facebook under Turpin Community YARD SALES,” she said. “There is something for everyone at these sales. File cabinets, toys, books, household items, kitchen items, furniture, clothing, tools, home decor, baby stuff and so much more. It will be a great day for shopping.”

Tara said, though, there is one thing shoppers traveling to Turpin need to know.

“That is at this time, there is not an ATM machine or anywhere to get change,” she said. “We are asking those that are shopping to bring small bills, $1, $5, $10 and nothing bigger than $20. This will help those who are having sales out.”
