L&T staff report

This Saturday, people can get a look at antique tractors and have some great barbecue at a business located just west of Liberal.

For the second year in a row, Keating Tractor and Seward County United Way are partnering up for the Smoke ’N Sweets Showdown and Antique Tractor Show.

The Smoke 'N Sweets Showdown will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Keating Tractor, and, “You can ‘smoke,’ ‘grill,’ ‘green egg’ and ‘anything you want,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

Organizers for the showdown originally were charging  a $25 entry fee for the showdown, but that fee has now been waived, and the deadline to enter is Friday. Barbecue can be cooked up early, but contestants must make arrangements to show up early.

The sweets category includes pies and other treats. For the pie category, contestants must provide a minimum of five pies, and they must be cooked at home or other location and brought to Keating for judging. Other items must also be cooked at home as well.

Each team must supply their own cutting utensils, and there will be a cooks meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Keating. Judging will be done by a panel of judges, and each team must supply enough of their smoked meat and barbecue or sweet for the judges.

Winning contestants will receive a grand prize of $500. Serving to the public will start at 11:30 a.m., and barbecue teams need to make sure they supply enough for tasting kits for the public.

Contestants are asked to bring their own extension cords if needed. Contact McKensie Hood for more information at 624-5400.

The Antique Tractor Show will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be a chance for enthusiasts to look through some of the farm equipment from the past, and although Keating is a John Deere dealership, the show is not just limited to that brand.

People will likely get to see tractors from many time periods from the 1920s till now and maybe even a few mowers. Event coordinators are promising food and snow cones at the ready with plenty of beautiful tractors to be seen.

“Please come on out and bring the family for a wonderful day at your local Keating Tractor & Equipment,” the event’s Facebook page said.
