Liberal City Commissioner Jack Carlile, 63, died in his home early Wednesday morning.

Carlile had been fighting respiratory issues in recent years and frequently used oxygen during meetings with the Liberal City Commission.

Carlile served on the Liberal City Commission since 2015 and was seeking re-election in the general election scheduled for Nov. 5.

Carlile supported initiatives that reshaped City Hall with new leadership, and he supported public priorities including the repurposing of South Middle School into a community recreation center.

“I am in shock over the passing of Jack Carlile,” Liberal Mayor Connie Seigrist said. “He loved Liberal, believed in Liberal and wanted only the best for all the citizens of Liberal. He was excited about the upcoming election and had lots of plans for his campaign. I will truly miss him as a businessman, a city commissioner, the president of the Senior Citizens Center Board and as a friend.”

Because of the timing of Carlile’s passing and the election being only three weeks away, Carlile’s name will still be on the ballot according to Seward County Clerk Stacia Long.

Currently, tentative plans are to host services for Carlile at 1 p.m. Saturday at the South Church of God, but those plans will not be finalized until later today.
