Redesign efforts continue throughout USD 480 and next year, Sunflower Elementary School will continue of the redesign effort’s goals, empowering students.

To help with this, the school will be implementing the Leader in Me program, which  is centered around Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the overall goal is to do a whole school transformation, according to Sunflower Elementary School teacher Jeana Winchester.

“It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and helps create a culture of student empowerment, which is something we really wanted to shift toward with our redesign,” Winchester said. “We want to give the students more choice and control, and we want to empower them to go out and be successful and not just here in the building. It’s centered around the idea that every student is a leader in some way, so we want to utilize that. Another big goal for Leader in Me is we want to create a culture of trust and engagement and empower students to lead their own lives and make good choices. It also provides the tools for students to better achieve their goals and develop their own voice.”

Winchester added many programs had been discussed before ultimately deciding on Leader in Me.
