Southern Pioneer Electric’s Helping Us Give to Society (HUGS) team presented staff of the Liberal Indoor Soccer League with a $875 grant to help in purchasing a scoreboard for the league. Currently, the organization provides opportunities for over 400 youth and adults to compete and engage in the community.

“Our HUGS team is excited for the opportunity to partner with Liberal Indoor Soccer on this project,” said Dee Longoria, HUGS team member. “We appreciate the group’s desire to create a space in our community that allows folks to gather together and compete.”

The HUGS team was approached about in the project December of 2019.  Joe Denoyer, father of a son that plays in the league, volunteered to speak with various local businesses about the organization’s need for the scoreboard. He reached out to members of the HUGS team and the grant was approved in early January.

“After visiting with several adult participants and organizers about the League…I asked if there was anything else that was needed; A scoreboard seemed to come up several times,” said Denoyer.

“With permission of the league, I visited with several groups, businesses and organizations. After submitting the proper paper work [For HUGS]…I was excited to learn that the project was approved. I would like to thank the HUGS Program through Southern Pioneer for all the great work they do in their service territory. Also a huge thank you to Liberal Indoor Soccer for ‘Filling the Gap’ and engaging the youth of our community.

Liberal Indoor Soccer holds leagues for both youth and adults and hosts matches each weekend. Matches are held in the reclaimed activity center of Iglesia de Dios Manantial de Vida on North Pershing Avenue. The congregation and local volunteers worked together in renovating the facility for the league. Together, they renovated the flooring, updated the heating and air systems and added seating for fans. The added inclusion of the updated scoreboard will allow the facility to host more games and tournaments for area communities to come and compete.

“It’s impressive all that this group has done,” said Longoria. “It’s a great example of community coming together to make something that can benefit many. We hope that the program continues to grow and that they have more opportunities to draw everyone together.”
